WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE
Our names are Thomas Jackson and Alex Bridle. We are two 17 year old students, currently in our AS year at school, and are raising money for Help for Heroes and, more specifically, for the new Personnel Recovery Centre, Tedworth House. Below is what we are doing and what you can do to help us.
THE 'WENT THE DAY WELL?' ANTHEM
Tom commissioned Ben Parry, the Director of the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London, to compose an anthem for the Choristers of St. Paul's Cathedral based upon two epitaphs written by the Greek Scholar John Maxwell Edmonds and first published in the Times in 1918:
Went the day well?
We died and never knew.
But, well or ill,
Freedom, we died for you.
Went the day well?
When you go home,
Tell them of us and say,
"For your tomorrows,
These gave their todays".
These wonderful lines written on behalf of those who died fighting for their country essentially mean: 'We fought for your freedom but died without knowing if our sacrifice was successful. Was it?' They are as relevant today as they were when they were first published in 1918.
This anthem was premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday, the 29th June 2011, at a most wonderful concert given by the Choristers in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester. It was a truly memorable evening. We have included a photograph of the concert as the header on this page. Please go to our June blog to have a look at several of the other beautiful photographs taken by Judy Totton during the course of the evening.
